The Legend Of Robin Hood
Robin Hood is a famous outlaw from English folklore. There are many ballads that tell of his excellence as an archer and a swordsman. He is most famously known for robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. He is assisted by his band of merry men that are also outlaws.
Friar Tuck, Little John, Much the Millers Son and Will Scarlet are some of Robin’s merry men. Maid Marian was his female companion. Robin’s archenemy is the Sheriff of Nottingham who in some versions answers to Prince John who is also Robin’s nemesis. The Sheriff is more of a cowardly schemer as compared to Sir Guy of Gisbourne who is his assistant.
The origins of the legend are not very clear. Some say that Robin Hood was mentioned in ballads or tales of outlaws. It is also believed that the legend may have stemmed from real outlaws in England.
Early ballads suggest that Robin Hood was active around the time of King Edward although it is not clear which of the three King Edwards it is. Other records seem to suggest that Robin lived in the time of King Richard the Lion heart who was held hostage after his return from the Crusades and his title usurped by Prince John.
In more modern versions of the legend, Robin is said to have lived in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire County. The legend says that the Great Oak in Sherwood Forest was the principal hideout for Robin Hood and his Merry Men.
Because of this, the townspeople of Sherwood consider him to be a symbol of the county. An annual Robin Hood festival is held in the romantic Sherwood Forest every year in celebration of the legend. This festival attracts Robin Hood enthusiasts and other visitors from the county and all over the UK.
The event creates a medieval atmosphere and has great characters from the legend of Robin Hood. Entertainment includes knights and strolling players, dressed in medieval costume, medieval as well as a field, full jesters, musicians, rat-hunting, alchemists and fire-eaters.
